Updates & Spring Break

Nothing new has really happened since my last post. I was hoping to get caught up over spring break, which was last week, but that didn’t happen. I think I might actually feel more exhausted than I did before it. It was one very full week which included a wedding, baby shower, a girls movie night, moving rooms of furniture around so roomies could move in, a few days dedicated entirely to school work, and a few other things. On Sunday we went out for lunch with some friends and ended up at the Stardome Comedy Club in Birmingham which was pretty fun, but almost every other day seemed like work.

I am now slowly trying to get caught up in my classes, outside design work, and independent projects. I turned in one internship application earlier this week and now trying to get a few things together to apply for a co-op position, which would probably be the best thing for both myself and Karl. Going through and formatting old files is so time-consuming and tedious. I hope to come up with a good system soon so that this won’t take so long in the future. I am also trying to get my online portfolio at carolrecord.com up and running. I think it is getting close, but I’ve having to figure things out as I go and am still trouble-shooting things like contact forms and file sizes.

I feel like I’m finally over the hill in Art History. I essentially have two major task in the class which include teaching a chapter from the book (now complete), and researching Fu Dogs & Guardian Figures and finding a way to help with the Objects of Luxury exhibit we’re going to do at the museum. Thank goodness I’m almost caught up in this class.

We’ve done more projects in Workshop than I expected us to do, but not what I had hoped to do. I was hoping we would spend more time really focusing on reworking and refining our portfolio, doing our resumes, and visiting printers and other things like that. We have been working on projects that are actually getting used, like the Symposium Cover design, a t-shirt & poster design for a local business, and now we’re participating in a logo design competition. With not much time left in this semester I guess I will have to do the things I had hoped for on my own this summer.

Letterform is sort of a blur, mostly due to it being so late in the day and me feeling utterly drained by the time I get there. It seems more tedious than fun, though I can understand the importance of what we’re working on. I guess I’m just ready to start having fun with letters instead of stressing over them. My personal project is slowly starting to move along now that I’ve completed enough research to start working on creating monograms. Immediately below is one monogram design I am happy with, but still working on.

I’m sort of stuck in a hard place with photography right now. I’ve had little time to shoot and have been unhappy with what I have shot. I think one of the many problems I’m having with photography is that I have unrealistic expectations of what my work should look like, which ends up preventing me from creating work. Being aware of a problem is the first step in conquering it, but it will probably be another week or so before I can really try to tackle this one.

I want to post more about the work I’m doing, but that will have to wait for another time.
