DragonCon 2021

DragonCon 2021 is a wrap! The convention was a little more than half its usual size (we’re estimating around 40-45k instead of the usual 85k) which was nice. Traffic inside the hotels wasn’t nearly as bad as usual and we made it into all of the panels we attempted. This was the year of the Loki variants. I also saw a lot of My Hero Academia, and Cruella. I was impressed that nearly everyone wore their masks. Karl and I had been a little nervous about attending but we felt pretty comfortable with the safety measures DragonCon put in place. My highlights from this year’s DragonCon included hanging out with friends and attending panels. I was especially happy to see the cast of Battlestar Galactica again. Karl and I just finished rewatching the show. It’s a classic!

Wednesday

  • Checked into the Westin
  • Dinner at Walburgers
    • This was our first time dining at Walburgers. It was pretty good, especially the sweet potato tots.
  • Drinks with friends at Trader Vics

Thursday

  • Stood in line for 2 hours to get our badges. For the past few years’ registration has only taken about half an hour so the two hour wait for a bit frustrating.
  • Dinner at the Sun Dial
    • The atmosphere and views are stunning, but the prices have increased since we last dined here a few years ago. Karl’s $100 steak was not worth the cost. If you want to check the Sun Dial out I’d recommend just going to the bar for a drink.
  • TVA Variants Ball (Marriott)
    • Popped into the TVA Variants Ball for a hot minute. Didn’t stay long because we’re still trying to be cautious of Covid, but I’m glad we popped in and danced to a few songs.

Friday

  • Late Show panel
  • Battlestar Galactica panel
  • Smallville panel
  • Lunch at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken
  • Walked through the Vendors Hall & the Gaming Area
  • Battlestar Galactica Trivia Contest
    • I was about to take the lead when my wifi connection dropped and I got kicked from the trivia contest. I managed to get back in but I missed several questions so fell behind. Super unfortunate.
  • Drinks with friends

Saturday

  • Star Trek Discovery panel
    • This was our first Star Trek Discovery panel, so it was great to get to see the cast in person and listen to their stories. Everyone was super lovely.
  • Garrett Wang panel
    • Garrett Wang, Ensign Kim from Star Trek Voyager, is also the Star Trek Tract Director for DragonCon. He’s a super friendly guy who is also a pleasure to see. He gave us a taste of one of his comedy performances and we had a great time.

Sunday

  • Christopher Eccelston panel
    • My first Doctor! Eccelston played the 9th Doctor in Doctor Who. I loved the grit and sarcastic charm he brought to the role, so I was really excited to get to see him. There has always been a little mystery around the reasons Eccelston left the role, but he answered questions about it very candidly which was both surprising and refreshing. He seemed down to earth which made me like him even more.

  • Miss Star Trek Universe Pageant
    • Garrett Wang invited us to the Miss Star Trek Universe Pageant, so we had to go and it was a blast. Garrett described it as one of the hidden gems of DragonCon and I would have to agree. This even will definitely be on my must-attend list in the future.

Monday

  • Battlestar Galactica panel
  • Vulcans: The People & Their Culture
Battlestar Galactica: Jamie Bamber & Edward James Olmos
