Korea Day 4: First Day of Class & Singing at a Noribang

Kookmin
- Class in 504 – learning consonants and vowels
- Visited the school Copy Store to pick up a workbook for the class.
- Lunch in Baguk Hall – rice cake bowl
- Photo walk around campus
- 3:30 pm, Special Lecture on Korean Millenials in the Global Center
The Underground
- Ovenmaru – Baked Chicken Restaurant for dinner
- Noribang – three hours of karaoke

First Day of Class

We began learning about Hangul, the Korean alphabet. Hangul was invented by King Sejong the Great in 1445 to write the Korean language. It’s very scientific and logical with shapes designed to mimic the shape of the mouth and/or throat, and is written in syllable blocks. Syllable blocks look confusing at first because we’re not used to them but they made reading much easier.

My language class, the beginner one, was located on the 4th floor.

After class we were escorted to the school’s copy store to get a workbook (pictured left). Both the textbook & workbook are unique to Kookmin University.

Lunch in Bugak Hall

After class a bunch of us went to Bugak Hall for lunch. I had a delicious apply pastry from Mirr Cafe and slightly too spicey for me, but super yummy Topokki from the traditional Korean restaurant.

Mirr Cafe in Bugak Hall serves pastries, beverages, and sweets.

Kookmin University – Photo Walk

Kookmin University’s campus is quite beautiful and has several really cool buildings.

Special Lecture

Our cultural activity for the day was a presentation on Understanding Korean Millennials in regards to Marketing. The special lecture was presented by marketing professor Dr. Jounghae Bang. I enjoyed the lecture, especially when we got to compete with each other on quizlet. Dani came in first place and won a box of cookies that she shared with us. 🙂

Dinner at OvenMaru Chicken

We had a group dinner at OvernMaru Chicken, located in the Underground near Kookmin. I was surprised by all the different flavors and toppings offered. There are way more options for chicken in Korea than in the U.S.

Singing the night away at a Noribang

I think it’s safe to say we all had a blast at the Noribang near Kookmin. We had a really large group so we rented the largest room available for 3 hours and sang our hearts out. It was a great group bonding experience and I sincerely enjoyed listening to everyone sing and perform.
