Grad Journal: Fall 2018, Week 9

Year 3, Week 9: October 15th-21th

I am so ready for fall break. Sadly it’s still several weeks away. I’m also really hurting for $. Karl and I are wanting to buy a house so I wish I had time to earn some extra income right now. I am working on getting my photo booth setup finessed so I can begin offering it as a service for a little side cash. Especially since I have a minion I can train to operate it when I’m not available. I set it up on Thursday at JSU for their Service Excellence, Faculty & Staff Appreciation event and everyone seems to love it so that’s promising.

Monday

  • Digital Lit.
    • Sat-in on Digital Literacy for the first time. I’ll be teaching it next semester so I want to get a feel for the class since I wasn’t able to shadow it.
  • Adv. Contemporary Media
    • Reviewed AR projects, printed and critiqued posters
  • Art Theory
  • Edited and uploaded Instructional Video homework. Premiere crashed on me and did not save my saves so I was up almost all night putting it back together. I was not a happy Carol.

Tuesday

  • Design Tech
    • applied last coat of silicone to half mask
    • pow-wow with Stefanie on Plasti-Paste demonstration
  • Entered Lensculture’s B&W Competition
  • Attempted to unwind
finished silicone mold

Wednesday

  • Video for Photographers
    • Reviewed instructional videos
      • My ending was too brief. I need to fix my audio which quickly became out of sync. And I need to remember to remove distracting elements ‘like the balloon’ from the set.
    • Homework: Instructional Video, Take 2 (must be related to the first video)
  • Lunch with Stefanie to finalize Plasti-paste demo plans (Baja Grill)
    • I wish I had more time to share meals and discuss projects with schoolmates. It was nice.

Thursday

  • Senior Projects
    • Seth gave his Freelancing presentation which was filled with all kinds of good advice.
    • I was a bit late and hurt from gathering and hauling photo equipment to the grad lab.
  • Design Tech
    • Stefanie and I did our Plasti-Paste demonstration. I’m excited to see how they turn out after they’ve cured next week. We used mine as an example of a 2-part support shell.
  • 360 photos of galleries
  • Set up and manned a photo booth from 2:30-7:00 pm for the JSU Service Excellence event. Seth helped me get things set up, and Karl showed up later to help give me a break and help break things down. I hurt really bad by the end of the evening from all the stuff I’d been hauling around and from being on my feet most of the day. I can’t wait to get enough of this weight off that I stop hurting so bad.

Friday / Saturday: SECAC Conference

I arrived in Birmingham around noon for my first SECAC conference, a conference for art schools and colleges that educators and grad students attend to present various topics. I’m going to do a separate blog post on SECAC so I’ll save the details for it. SECAC was a really nice little conference. I saw several panels of particular interests to me, and I am going to try to propose a session for next years conference.

I talked Karl into driving down after work so we could have dinner together and then go out the next day when my conference schedule wrapped. We had an okay dinner at Todd English Pub Friday night, but we had a great lunch at Ghion Ethiopian Restaurant at Pizitz on Saturday. We also visited World Market, one of our favorite stores, before returning home.

Sunday

  • Attend my niece’s 3rd birthday party. It was so cute watching all the kids run around. I got a little photo practice in while I was there. The older I get the more I enjoy being around my family for gatherings and such. Wish I had time to do it more often.
  • Karl and I drove around and scouted out a few houses we are hoping to look at this coming week.
  • Video Homework: Instructional Video Take 2: Jem Makeup Tutorial
