Quote of the Day
|
A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing. – William Dobell
I love this. There are times when our art might require us to create something realistic and exact, but I think this guy is onto something when he says ‘a sincere artist tries to create something that is, in itself, a living thing.’ I think this is hard to accomplish, but as an artist, there have been times when I perhaps felt like I was pouring so much of myself or my feeling into something that it took on some special character.
I also interpret this as meaning that a sincere artist isn’t just a copyist. A sincere artist sees beyond or into what is in front of him/her and uses their ability to create an image that allows others to see something in a different light.
